Grace Adkins Haines Life
long Portland resident Leona Grace Adkins Haines died of pneumonia October 16,
2000. She was Seventy-seven. A private service was held. Leona was the daughter of Claud Adkins and Grace Millicent Bates, born January 27, 1923, in Portland. Her maternal grandparents were Marion Albert Bates and Ada Alice Maynard; her paternal grandparents were William Henry Adkins and Anna Saling. She was the great-granddaughter of Clark R Adkins and Louisa Cain, and the great-great-granddaughter of James Adkins and Lucy Morgan. Leona
graduated from Commerce High School, Portland, Oregon, in 1941. In 1942, she
married her husband Ira Milburn Haines. During World War II, she was a secretary
for several companies, including Commercial Iron Works, and after the war she
was a homemaker. Ira
Haines died in 1967. Leona is survived by her two daughters, and nieces
and nephews. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Carl W Rhea was the grandson of Emmaline Sophronia Adkins and Columbus Adolphus Rhea, and the great-great grandson of James Adkins and Lucy Morgan Carl W. RheaHEPPNER — The funeral for Carl W. Rhea will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Heppner United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hermiston Cemetery. Mr. Rhea, 85, of Heppner, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his home. He was born March 12, 1915, at Heppner, to Curtis and Cecil Rankin Rhea. He was raised at Eightmile near Rhea Creek and attended school there until the family moved to Stanfield in 1927. He graduated from Stanfield High School in 1933. On April 12, 1936, he married Mildred N. Phelps, at Pendleton. He farmed in the Hermiston/Butter Creek area, then farmed at the Griebe Ranch near Lexington for 25 years. He retired in 1980, and he and his wife moved to Hermiston. Mrs. Rhea died in 1990, then in 1997, he moved to Heppner. Mr. Rhea enjoyed fishing, tinkering and fabricating, playing cards, telling jokes, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a 50-year member and past master of the Umatilla Masonic Lodge and was active in Eastern Star where he had served as worthy patron. He also served as a 4-H Leader for a number of years. Survivors include son, three daughters, three sisters and one brother; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son, Carl W. Rhea Jr., a brother, Curtis Rhea Jr., and sisters, Sophronia Kirkham, and Josephine Liesegang, also preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Memorial Home Health, P.O. Box 9, Heppner, OR 97836; or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201. Sweeney Mortuary of Heppner is in charge of arrangements.
